Advanced Midwifery Practice (AMP) M.Sc. program
The "Master of Science Advanced Midwifery Practice (AMP)" course has been offered by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne since the winter semester 2025/26.
The aim of the course is to enable midwives with professional experience to develop their professional knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for an extended autonomous area of practice. To enable them to perform their role as members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team within healthcare organizations and as professional leaders in their field. Students will also be trained as professionals who are clinically competent and able to provide high quality direct care to pregnant women, new mothers and clients, particularly from marginalized and vulnerable groups, throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
The Master of Science in Advanced Midwifery Practice is a modular program with a standard duration of four semesters. In the 14 modules of the course, 120 credit points are earned.

All modules are taught, learned and worked in a methodical, scientific and practice-oriented manner. Advanced practical and communication skills are practiced and deepened in the Cologne Interprofessional Skills Lab and Simulation Center (KISS).

The required elective module “Clinical Supervision & Mentorship” prepares students to work as clinical supervisors. In the “Family Health Midwifery” module, students learn how to provide appropriate support to families in stressful situations and with special care needs, and how to strengthen parental responsibility.
Clinical placements allow students to practice the competencies of an Advanced Practice Midwife (APM) under the supervision of experts and open up an international mobility window, so that the placement period can also be planned and carried out at a foreign healthcare facility. The clinical placements can be completed during the current semester or during the break between semesters.
In addition to the master’s qualification for midwives, a Master of Science in Advanced Nursing Practice (ANP) program for nursing professionals is being implemented in parallel. The majority of the modules are taken jointly by the students; approximately one-third of the modules have a subject-specific, practice-oriented focus with specializations in AMP or ANP. The academic focus is provided by the Institute of Midwifery Science (IfH) and the Institute of Nursing Science (IfP).
Balancing Studies and Work
The course schedule has been designed to include in-person classes two to three days a week every two weeks. This is supplemented by regularly scheduled online classes during the remaining weeks of the semester. The course load is a maximum of 12 hours per week. This allows students to continue working while pursuing their studies.
